Day 26 A Christmas Story

“My father worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium, a master.”

I am such a geek about this movie I get a joy rush just looking at the picture. If there is a more quotable movie on the planet I can’t think of one. Nothing gets me in the holiday spirit faster than this movie. I have seen it so many times I can recite it –  but my family finds that annoying.

I think there is just something so wonderful about watching loving family dysfunction played out on the big screen. It’s also great to go back to the mindset of being a kid and what school, Christmas and family is like from that point of view.  I love the wit and humor of the narrator and how he so seriously breaks down the politics of double and triple dog dares on the playground. In my dreams I’m capable of writing that kind of witty dialogue.

Watching this movie is one of my most cherished holiday rituals.  A couple of years ago we took this ritual to another level when we watched it outside under the stars complete with snow, hot chocolate and cookies out at Palmetto Bluff. What a blast! Watching A Christmas Story at home in my pj’s is great but watching with a whole group of fellow A Christmas Story lovers outside at night in beautiful Palmetto Bluff is unforgettable. Tonight will be the third year we continue this family tradition. If you haven’t had the opportunity to experience this event please treat yourself. You can get more info here.

If you need additional holiday inspiration my other favorite Christmas movies are Christmas Vacation, Elf, Love Actually and The Family Stone. I am also embarrassed to admit I sometimes watch the cheesy “Lifetime -ish” holiday movies like Holiday in Handcuffs which stars Melissa Joan Hart and the guy from Saved by the Bell. Don’t tell anyone.

Tonight I will forget about the stress of this week and I will be surrounded by friends and kindred spirits in my full A Christmas Story Glory. Hopefully it will be loud enough nobody will hear me reciting the words. 🙂

Let the fun begin!
